Tribute to Bishop Kakubi

Born on 23rd September 1929 in Burunduma Parish to Mr. Rafaili Ziridamu and Kandida Kiremire, Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kakubi’s journey began humbly but destined for greatness. His life was marked by a profound commitment to faith and service. After his ordination as a priest on 11th July 1960, he went on to dedicate his life to the church and its mission.

In 1969, at the age of 40, he was consecrated as Bishop of Mbarara Diocese on 1st August, a significant moment in his life. The Principal Consecrator, none other than Pope Paul VI, stood as a testament to the importance of this event in both his life and the history of the Church in Uganda. As the first African Bishop of Mbarara Diocese, he succeeded Bishop Ogez and led the Diocese with unwavering strength and devotion until his retirement on 23rd November 1991.

During his years of service, Bishop Kakubi became known not only for his spiritual guidance but also for his pioneering efforts in establishing Vocational Catholic schools. His vision for education and the future of Uganda’s youth was instrumental in shaping the direction of vocational training in the region. His legacy lives on in the institutions he helped to develop, such as the St. Joseph’s Vocations School, where he was laid to rest after passing away on 11th February 2016 at the age of 86.

Through the years of war and political unrest, Bishop Kakubi was a steady presence, always standing with his people, providing solace, guidance, and leadership during times of hardship. His deep empathy and commitment to his people made him a revered figure not just within the Church but across the community he served. He spent 55 years as a priest in the Archdiocese of Mbarara and 46 years as a bishop, dedicating his life to service, and leaving a profound impact on all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bishop Kakubi’s story is one of faith, courage, and dedication. His legacy endures not just in the institutions he founded, but in the hearts of all those he served and guided throughout his remarkable life.

Staff

Honoring our Dedicated Staff

At Saint Joseph’s Vocational School, Mbarara, our staff stands as the backbone of our institution’s remarkable reputation. Our school is more than just a place of learning; it is a community where faith, education, and skill development come together to shape the future of our students.

As a Catholic-founded, boys-only senior secondary school, we take pride in our unique approach to education, combining traditional academic excellence with vocational training in Agriculture, Carpentry, Woodwork, and Building Construction. Our staff, from the committed teachers to the diligent support personnel, play an integral role in delivering this well-rounded education, ensuring that our students are not only academically equipped but also practically skilled to face the world with confidence.

The dedication of our staff is evident in every aspect of school life. Their efforts go beyond the classroom, fostering an environment where our boys can thrive spiritually, intellectually, and morally. They are more than educators; they are role models who embody the values of our Catholic heritage, guiding students to grow into responsible, faith-filled men who are ready to contribute positively to society.

We are deeply grateful for the tireless commitment and passion our staff brings to Saint Joseph’s Vocational School, Mbarara. Their work ensures that our school remains a beacon of excellence, where young men are not only educated but also formed to lead lives of purpose, guided by the principles of faith and service.

School Food

School Food

  1. Dietary Patterns:
    • We serve staples like matoke (green bananas), posho (maize porridge), rice, beans, G.nuts, and various vegetables.
    • School meals often reflect local dietary patterns and despite changing seasons, climate change, and rising food costs, we have maintained our menu over time.
    • Our boys enjoy Porridge in the morning and black tea in the evening.
  2. Catering and Serving:
    • Like many other schools in Uganda, we have our own kitchen or catering services to provide meals for students.
    • Our students do not queue for meals; instead, food is arranged on serving tables, allowing students to serve themselves and dine while seated in the dining room.
  3. Nutritional Considerations:
    • The nutritional content of school meals is an important consideration. Balanced diets with essential nutrients are crucial for the growth and development of students.
  4. Local Ingredients:
    • We source ingredients locally, contributing to the support of local farmers and ensuring the freshness of the food.

Bursaries

Academic Bursaries

The school offers a limited number of bursaries to some of the best-performing students in each class. The bursaries are academically based and are funded by the school, sister schools through exchange programs, old boys, school well-wishers, NGOs, catholic funding programs, etc.

The school may also offer half bursaries to top-performing students who are unable to raise the entire school fees and are highly disciplined.

Wellness Support

Spiritual Guidance: We provide spiritual support through religious education classes, prayer sessions, and guidance from clergy or religious leaders. Students have access to pastoral care, retreats, and other activities that nurture their spiritual development each term.

Counseling Services: We offer counseling services to address the emotional and psychological needs of students. Our Professional counselor is available every day to help students navigate personal challenges, stress, and other mental health issues. We also deploy external facilitators to talk to students and encourage them.

Health Education: We promote health education initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles, hygiene, and preventive healthcare. Students may receive information on nutrition, exercise, and the importance of maintaining good physical health.

Community Outreach: Our students engage in community outreach programs to instill a sense of social responsibility in themselves. This could involve participating in charity work, community service projects, or partnerships with local organizations to address societal needs.

Values-based Education: We prioritize values-based education that incorporates moral and ethical teachings. This can contribute to the overall well-being of students by fostering a sense of responsibility, compassion, and respect for others.

Extracurricular Activities: Participation in extracurricular activities, such as sports, arts, and cultural programs, contributes to students' holistic development. These activities provide opportunities for social interaction, skill development, and stress relief.

Parental Involvement: We encourage parental involvement in wellness initiatives. This could include parent meetings, parent visits, or support groups for parents to enhance their understanding of the well-being and development of their boys.

Anti-Bullying Programs: we have implemented anti-bullying programs to create a safe and supportive environment for students. These programs aim to prevent and address instances of bullying and promote positive interpersonal relationships.

Wellfair Committees: These committees or teams focus specifically on developing and implementing programs to support the overall well-being of students. These committees include teachers, administrators, the counselor, and student leaders.
