Tribute to Bishop Kakubi
Born on 23rd September 1929 in Burunduma Parish to Mr. Rafaili Ziridamu and Kandida Kiremire, Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kakubi’s journey began humbly but destined for greatness. His life was marked by a profound commitment to faith and service. After his ordination as a priest on 11th July 1960, he went on to dedicate his life to the church and its mission.
In 1969, at the age of 40, he was consecrated as Bishop of Mbarara Diocese on 1st August, a significant moment in his life. The Principal Consecrator, none other than Pope Paul VI, stood as a testament to the importance of this event in both his life and the history of the Church in Uganda. As the first African Bishop of Mbarara Diocese, he succeeded Bishop Ogez and led the Diocese with unwavering strength and devotion until his retirement on 23rd November 1991.
During his years of service, Bishop Kakubi became known not only for his spiritual guidance but also for his pioneering efforts in establishing Vocational Catholic schools. His vision for education and the future of Uganda’s youth was instrumental in shaping the direction of vocational training in the region. His legacy lives on in the institutions he helped to develop, such as the St. Joseph’s Vocations School, where he was laid to rest after passing away on 11th February 2016 at the age of 86.
Through the years of war and political unrest, Bishop Kakubi was a steady presence, always standing with his people, providing solace, guidance, and leadership during times of hardship. His deep empathy and commitment to his people made him a revered figure not just within the Church but across the community he served. He spent 55 years as a priest in the Archdiocese of Mbarara and 46 years as a bishop, dedicating his life to service, and leaving a profound impact on all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bishop Kakubi’s story is one of faith, courage, and dedication. His legacy endures not just in the institutions he founded, but in the hearts of all those he served and guided throughout his remarkable life.
